so much to say

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Alright kids, my work here is done. And now what do I do? I am stuck in a cafe because it is pouring down rain. A man next to me says to two nice women, “I will cut your ear off.” For the next week I will eat a lot and ride my bike.

Friday I attended the world premiere of the documentary film, William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet, which is about the making of a ballet set to Shatner’s record, Has Been. This was at the Nashville Film Festival, to which I received free passes. The movie was just OK, but Mr. Shatner was there, along with Ben Folds and a slew of other celebrities. Very strange.

Yesterday, I was in Chattanooga, TN, for an Avett Brothers concert. Very good, very good. However, before the show, Kate and I went to a pizza place to get some slices. We waited in line for half an hour. Then waited at our table for 45 minutes to get three slices of pizza. So, we decided to slip vodka into our water glasses.

Apparently, Kate and I are now models. See for yourself HERE. Story goes: we were out on the artwalk in March, dressed up very nice, and a photographer, Sheri O’Neal, approached us asking if she could photograph us. So it goes. (there are three photos up on her site there. they were all shot in my house)

Speaking of photos: go HERE for a large collection of photos of Hatch and such.

This post is long and rambling… Congratulations to my good friend Heather Petersen for her acceptance to the graduate theatre program at Ohio University. A full ride scholarship! Cheers!

That same man next to me is now praying with these two woman. A spiritual revival is occurring.

Now I will share with you my recent and final Hatch posters. A show in the Nashville Cats series at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Wayne Moss

A commemorative poster for the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum’s 10th anniversary. Hamilton is the type foundry that made much of Hatch Show Print’s collection over the past 130 years.

A silly poster to warn the kids not to put their faces in Huey’s face.

This was typeset by Mr. Jim, but I got to print it on my last day. It is inked by hand on the press. A gift for Simon (which is not the Simon as I first thought) for his work with American Idol when it came to the Grand Ole Opry.
thankyou

Thanks, kids. More misadventures to come.

one week to go

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

I have one more week on the job. Over so soon! It is great work, but it is unpaid work. Money running out. Must go home. But to return to TN soon?

Another wedding poster. This was the one that the client did not like at first. I made minor changes–to froof it up, make it a bit more feminine. Looks good, looks good.

Other projects and random images.

Closing time at the Italian Market. Quick post. What I love about this place is that they seem to only play Brazilian music on the stereo. I have no internet at home, so I appreciate their free wireless.

I finished those Nashville Film Festival award certificates today. The photo is bad, so I will explain. I printed NaFF repeated over and over again, with no ink for the background, just leaving the impression. Then I made a stencil and hand-inked the yellow (it took all day Friday to do so). The blank lines in the green will be filled in with the winners’ names.

And here is my design I have submitted to the KWVA 88.1 FM Birthday Bash T-Shirt Design Contest Thingy-Ma-Jigga.

church yard sales

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

So, I am currently eating gelato at the Italian Market in my neighborhood, but I was delayed briefly by a yard sale two blocks from my house, at the church-run This & That Thrift Store. The lady tells me that everything is ten cents. I says, “Ten cents?” She says, “Ten cents.” They were closing up shop in fifteen minutes, so I got the last pickins, but I walked off with two great shirts and three books, one of which is an illustrated manual on how to exercise while working in an office. A lovely day here, it is. Warm sunshine and the never-ending Nashville breeze. Even more lovely (and luxurious) was my brunch: french toast, mimosas, coffee, mango, and fried plantains, outside on the porch of my co-worker Brad’s house. This was much needed because before this we ran the 5-mile Richland Creek Run, starting in the brisk air of 8am. You know, I did not do terribly either–not great, but for my first race pretty good. The results show my decent finish, considering I have never done a race before, and I don’t train, just ride my bike for transportation. Five miles in 42:15 minutes, 70th place among the men, 4th place in my age group (20-24 yrs, which there were only four of us anyway). The whole reason I did this was because Brad is a runner, and he designed the poster at Hatch for this event, so we received four free registrations. Yadda yadda yadda.

I don’t have any new images from work, so I am just talking. I am working on another wedding poster, for a couple in Seattle. This time, however, I got my first minor rejection. They didn’t like the proof of my design. They wanted a movie poster look, but they thought mine had a boxing poster look. I don’t agree, but the customer knows best. But then again, we do know what we are doing at the shop. We will do all we can to get the client what s/he wants, but s/he is going to have to relinquish that tight control they are compelled to have and trust us that we will deliver a beautiful poster. I will make minor changes here, call her on Monday, and convince her that she loves the poster. Other than that, I am doing the award certificates for the Nashville Film Festival, which offers its perks as well: the shop gets 40 free passes. Each certificate is hand-colored and purty.

It’s too bad I am going to miss summer here. Although it sounds unbearably hot and humid, I want to experience it for myself. I would want to live more central to town, so I could walk and ride more easily. And I would go to Las Paletas all the time (home-made Mexican popsicle shop). I would be shirtless like my buddy Carlos. My friend Caitlin told me the first summer she was here, she did not think Carlos even owned a shirt. Wasn’t till November when she found out, yes, Carlos does own a shirt.

I want to plug my fellow artists/co-workers, all of whom show together as the group Popsicle Sticks and Rhinestones. They are great printmakers outside of work, too. Julie Sola makes great colorful linoleum cuts and such. Her shop (fatcrowpress.etsy.com). Brad Vetter, and his girlfriend Adrienne, sell drawings and prints and posters at their online shop (theclearancesale.etsy.com). Then there is miss Nieves Uhl who sells her work and vintage stuff at snowowl.etsy.com and NervousMule.etsy.com. I don’t know if the others have websites or anything like that. Alright, just getting the word out there.
